Art is a vast word and encompasses a large area of creativity within its gamut. So, if we say art as a career option we need to talk about various creative fields like painting, sculpturing, sand art, clay modelling, music both vocal and instrumental, various dance forms, theatre, etc. The word art basically refers to the communication or expression of human feelings through various creative modes like colours, sketchings, literature, theatre, etc.  In this age of technology we have another form of art, that is known as digital art.

Here we would like to focus on a few forms of art that can be taken up as a career option.

Avenues:

  • Painting
  • Cartooning
  • Theatre
  • Digital Art

Painting:  Painting is one such creative field that can be introduced at a very early age. It is one of the earliest careers that can be dated back to the cave paintings of ancient Greece to the canvas paintings of today. Painting as a career offers numerous career options to satisfy your creative cravings. The most popular types of paint include oil paint, watercolor paint, acrylic paint, and tempera paint. Traditional canvas include cloth canvases and paper canvases, but other materials, like wood and stone, can also be used.

Qualifications: BA in Creative Art or post graduate diploma in Art (not compulsory to have formal certification.

Institutes:

  • National Museum
  • Delhi College of Art

Duration: 3yrs degree or 1 year diploma

Eligibility: 10+2 in any stream

Aptitude:  A very creative mind with amazing imaginative qualities.

Career options: One can work in any Art College as Faculty or Art teacher in School. One can also work as a freelancer.

Starting remuneration: Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 per month.

Challenges:  money can be a constraint in the initial days of your career.

But you will love your job because: It satisfies your creative hunger and gives you the freedom to express yourself.

Cartooning: When we talk about Cartoons, the general idea that comes to our mind is a comic strip. Most newspapers carry a comic strip either depicting a current socio-political issue or a fiction with the purpose of creating humour. So, cartooning can be defined as a form of art where the artist tries to sketch a funny picture of any real life character or imagination.  

Qualifications: BA in Creative Art or post graduate diploma in Art (not compulsory to have formal certification.

Institutes:

  • Indian Institute of Cartooning
  • Kerela Cartoon Academy
  • National Institute of Design
  • Film & Television Academy of India

Duration: 3yrs degree or 1 year diploma

Eligibility: 10+2 in any stream though not compulsory

Aptitude:  A very good sense of humour and the ability to give an outline to your imaginations. Cartoonists are good story tellers as well.  

Career options: Cartoonists can work as Illustrators in newspapers, television channels, teachers, etc, or can also work as freelancers.

Starting remuneration: Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 per month.

Challenges:  there is initial struggle. However, once you get experience and exposure money comes in easily.

But you will love your job because: This form of art allows you to express your ideas in a humorous way and also makes you a better observer.  

Theater:

Theater is a form of fine art that uses enacting a real or imaginary situation in front of an audience by means of various speech, music and body gestures. Theater is a way of expression generally used for the purpose of entertainment. Theater includes musicals, ballets and operas, etc.

Qualifications: Training or self learning

Institutes:

  • National School of Drama, New Delhi
  • FTII, Pune
  • Sangeet Natak Academy
  • Kerela Kalamandalam

Duration: 3yrs degree or 1 year diploma

Eligibility: 10+2 in any stream though not compulsory

Aptitude:  You need to be a sensitive person who can understand and feel the character he is playing so that he can give life to it and bring in realism.

Career options: Theatre persons can have a wide range of career options staring from acting on stage shows to television and cinema. Theatre professionals can also work behind the screen and work as directors, writers, etc.

Starting remuneration: Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 per month.

Challenges:  earning money can be difficult initially. But once you have established yourself, sky is the limit.

But you will love your job because: the best thing is that you get an opportunity to act as many characters as you like and express yourself the way you want. Moreover, once you get recognition there is a no dearth of fame and money.

Digital Art:

Digital art is entirely new age form of art based on digital technology. It is basically creating work of art by using computer software. It is also known as computer art or multimedia art.

Qualifications: Diploma in Animation or Gaming

Institutes:

  • Arena Animation
  • Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics
  • Kar Jen Multimedia & Animation
  • Toonz Animation

Duration: 3yrs degree or 1 year diploma

Eligibility: 10+2 in any stream though not compulsory

Aptitude:  You need to have a creative mind and the inquisitiveness to appreciate to miracles of technology.

Career options: There are amazing career options in the field of multimedia and digital art. One can find employment in Advertising agencies, television channels, film production houses and can also work independently.

Starting remuneration: Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 per month.

Challenges: It’s a very competitive field and to be successful one need to really think out of the box and be different.

But you will love your job because: One can earn handsomely once you have established yourself in the industry. One can get both creative as well as financial satisfaction in this field.
