Pre-school

Children between 2 to 5 years old take admission in pre-school. This is for the first time that a child leaves the comfort of her home to step out. As a pre-school teacher, you will have great impact on the child’s development and progress, just as a potter has while molding wet clay.

Qualification: Nursery Teacher Training / Bachelors of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) / Bachelors of Education (Nursery) {B.Ed (Nursery)}

Institutes: Various private and public institutes (recognized by National Council for Teacher Education)

Duration: One year

Eligibility: Senior Secondary School certificate or Intermediate or its equivalent

Aptitude: Patient, creative, amicable, innovative, polite and cheerful

Career options: Innumerable pre-schools opening at every nook and corner of every city or if you have the right experience, finances and guidance, you can even start a play school of your own.

Starting remuneration: Rs. 5,000 – Rs. 20,000 pm

Challenges: Coordinating a class of 10 to 15 children who can create a pandemonium. And of course not to forget, the high expectations of parents

But you will love your job because: There are very few professions that offer this rare satisfaction of nurturing and preparing the toddlers to look forward to higher institutions of education.

Primary School

Class I – V: Formative years in school when children are introduced to various disciplines of science and art at elementary level. As a primary school teacher, besides teaching the curriculum, you will nurture the skills and talents of children, keeping their curiosity aroused to learn and gather more.

Qualification:

  • Bachelors of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) / Bachelors of Education (B.Ed)

Challenges: With the number of students increasing per class, the job pressure for teachers have multiplied manifold. Most often, teachers are asked to stay back for an hour or so to manage the building responsibilities. And getting up early if you are a night owl!

But you will love your job because: if you are educating children, you are imparting knowledge to a part of the society for a better and promising tomorrow. Children are always full of surprises and not to forget, long holidays which no other job offers.

Secondary/ middle school

Class VI – X: Middle school when students enter as children but leave as young adults. These five years bring about many transformations. A TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher) is not an academician alone but also a guardian who is responsible to develop students emotionally, socially and intellectually

Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree + B.Ed/ Four-year Integrated B.Ed programme

Challenges: Managing teenagers can be tricky, also you have to stay updated about the rules and regulation of ever-changing education system

But you will love your job because: you will help the next generation to think independently and rationally, maneuver through a difficult and confusing phase of life and foster them to take critical decisions which impact the rest of their lives

Senior Secondary/ Intermediate school

Class XI  – XII: Two crucial years in the last phase of school life where students take important career decisions. A PGT (Postgraduate Trained Teacher) is often consulted for guidance to help students take the right decision which will greatly impact their professional lives.

  • Master’s degree + B.Ed / Two-years Integrated M.Ed

Challenges: Staying updated about higher level of education in order to prepare students

But you will love your job because: It is not only about teaching but also inventing and learning newer ways to teach. That is what keeps the process of imparting knowledge always engaging. And of course, when your students will crack tough entrance exams and become a source of inspiration, no words can match your sense of pride.

College/ University

Three or Four-year bachelor programme and post-graduate programmes: A large section of students join a particular course at a particular college for a career path they have already chosen. There will however be a few who will be in the process of self-discovery!

Teaching is not spoon feeding but in form of lectures where pupils are guided through details of subjects to draw their own parameters. Newly turned adults are intelligent, confident and have their own opinion. As a college lecturer, you will motivate students to frequent libraries and do research to find answers as colleges do not have any text books.

Qualification: UGC-NET (National Eligibility Test for humanities)/ UGC-CSIR NET (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research for science)

Institutes: The UGC conducts this test twice every year for lectureship and fellowship

Eligibility: Master’s degree with 55% aggregate

Aptitude:

  • Public speaking as the strength of combined tutorials may fit into an auditorium
  • Planning and preparing lessons in advance
  • Guide and support students with research, paper presentation, field trips and work placement

Career options:

  • Central universities
  • State universities: run by different state governments
  •        Deemed universities: a single institution empowered to confer its own educational degrees to its graduating students
  • Private universities
  • Autonomous universities: like IIT, IIM, AIIM, NIT and so on

Starting remuneration: Rs. 20,000 – Rs. 25,000 pm

Challenges: Teaching in college is different from teaching at school. In a generation of social media and instant status uploading, a lecturer should never underestimate the power and intelligence of the present youth. They have surpassed many to grab the seat in the coveted institution.

But you will love your job because: it is incredibly rewarding to talk and discuss about a subject that you enjoy. It is not a nine-to-five job but flexible where you can swap your lectures. What’s more, you get to a chance to do research in your subject and contribute academic papers to many journals or write a book as well.
